A powerful earthquake struck off Indonesia’s archipelago’s coast on Wednesday killing at least 15 people, says country’s disaster management agency.
JAKARTA, Indonesia: A major earthquake struck Sunday near the north coast of West Papua, Indonesia, killing at least two people and injuring 35, government officials said.
The magnitude 7.6 quake occurred at about 4:43 a.m. (2:43 p.m. Saturday ET), about 95 miles (150 km) west-northwest of Manokwari, Indonesia, and about 105 miles (170 km) east-northeast of Sorong — two cities in the Indonesian province of West Papua.
According to reports, the earthquake, having a depth of almost 62 kms, struck in the waters off the main island of Java, about 200 kilometers south-southeast of the capital of Jakarta.
The US Geological Survey initially estimated the quake at a 7.4 magnitude, but has since downgraded it to a 7.0.
