frank-mccourt-diedThe author of Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt died yesterday. He was 78 years old. The famous author died at a Manhattan hospice in New York City.According to his brother Malachy McCourt, Frank had been ill because of meningitis and he was also been treated for melanoma recently. Melanoma is name of a deadliest form of skin cancer.

Initially, he was known as a creative writing teacher and as a local character. He was also known for telling stories with his younger brother and singing songs. He was often seen among the crowds at The White Horse Tavern. But after the publication of Angela’s Ashes in 1996, he got fame worldwide. Angela’s Ashes is prize-winning book, in which he wrote about various incidents occurred in his childhood. He himself described Angela’s Ashes as “an epic of woe”.

He wrote some other books including ‘Tis’, ‘Teacher Man’ and ‘Angela and the Baby Jesus’, but Angela’s Ashes is considered the best.

He was born on August 19, 1930, in Brooklyn. But to escape the depression, his parents returned back to their home in Ireland. Limerick was the place, where the family lived. About Limerick, McCourt wrote,

“where their small, damp home was next to a smelly, rat-infested lavatory shared by the other families on the block.”

Of seven children, Frank McCourt was the oldest. While the family were in New York, from unknown causes his sister had died and about an year after the family moved to Ireland, Frank’s twin brothers died of pneumonia. At the age of 10, he suffered typhus himself and was hospitalized.

The Angela’s Ashes came to an end when was 19 and went back to the US. He said,

“All I had was this story. It took me two years and all my life to write it,”

He also said,

“At 66, you’re supposed to die or get haemorrhoids. I just wrote the book and was amazed and astounded that it became a best-seller and won the Pulitzer Prize. It still hasn’t sunk in.”
